The Basics

Why did the name change?

We refreshed our name and look to better reflect the real choices Oregon families make, and to make it clear that we support every kind of future, not just college. Embark is still the plan you know and trust, now with a name that’s inclusive of every path.

What can I use my Embark savings for?

Embark savings can be used for all kinds of education expenses, not just college. That includes trade schools, community colleges, apprenticeships, graduate school, and more. As long as it’s a qualified education expense, your savings can help cover it.

What if my beneficiary decides not to go to school or use all of the funds?

We know life doesn’t always go according to plan. That’s why Embark is built to adjust with your goals. If your kid chooses a different path or doesn’t use all their funds, you have options. You can:

  • Change the beneficiary to another eligible family member.
  • Keep the savings for future education.
  • Roll over the funds into a Roth IRA for retirement.
  • Or, withdraw the money (just know that non-qualified withdrawals may be subject to taxes and a 10% penalty on earnings).
Who can open an account?

Anybody with a Social Security number or tax ID can open an Embark account.

Can I open more than one account?

Absolutely! You may decide to open separate accounts for different beneficiaries.

What is Embark?

What is the difference between an Embark account and a Roth IRA account?

Are investments in my Embark account guaranteed not to lose money or are they insured?

No. As with any investment, there is some risk involved. Learn how Embark accounts balance risk and growth potential.

What role does Oregon State Treasury play in Embark?

Embark is administered by the Oregon Treasury Savings Network which is a division of the Oregon State Treasury.

What is the difference between an Embark account and a traditional savings account?

Money kept in a traditional savings account earns interest at a modest rate, while funds in an Embark account can be invested in a variety of options with the potential to grow at a faster rate.

What are the fees associated with an Embark account?

Fees for each investment option are different, but the average annual cost is 0.28% of your invested assets per year, which translates to $2.80 in fees for every $1000 you invest.
