Embark Now, Go Far: Helping Families Launch Their Education Savings.

With giant coins and an even bigger rocket-shaped piggy bank, Embark went to the Oregon Zoo to help families think about saving for their kids’ future in a whole new way.

At a glance:

  • Embark visited the Oregon Zoo to show families how saving early can help kids reach new heights.
  • We brought along a giant rocket-shaped piggy bank and added large Embark coins to it throughout the day as we talked to more families.
  • Some of the people we talked to were already saving with Embark, while others hadn’t considered planning for education yet.
  • We played a game of fact or fiction to help families discover the truth about common saving misconceptions.

Making saving for tomorrow feel more real.

As Oregon’s 529 savings plan, Embark is here to help families across the state save for education. But we know how easy it is to get caught up in the hectic routine of daily life and how daunting financial topics can feel. When you don’t know how much to save or when to start, it’s natural to push opening an education savings account down your to-do list.

That’s why we partnered with the Oregon Zoo to connect with the local community and find out how families are thinking about the future, and help them prepare for what comes next.

First, we grabbed a little attention by rolling out huge Embark coins across Oregon to serve as a reminder of how small amounts can gain momentum. Then, we unveiled a giant rocket-shaped piggy bank at the Oregon Zoo. Perched on a launchpad and gradually filling up with coins, the rocket shows how saving today helps your kid go far.

In front of our rocket piggy bank, we talked to families about 529 plans, how to save, and why starting early matters. Plus, we busted a few myths about education savings.

What we heard from local families.

Some people we talked to already had Embark accounts, while others hadn’t thought about saving yet. Here’s what a few of them had to say about planning ahead.

"I really wanted to make sure that I was prepared so that my daughter could do whatever she wanted to do. My advice for new parents would be ‘start now.’ Even though I started when she was one, I wish I had started saving even sooner. Don't wait. Just start now. $5, $10, whatever you can do!"

— Kelsey

"I'd like to give my kid what I had. As a parent, you want one less thing for your child to worry about as far as pursuing higher education. Then all they have to do is make sure they get good grades."

— Anne

"As a parent, you have a lot going on, but Embark is a no brainer. It opens up so many opportunities for my kids."

— Adolfo

"I have Embark accounts for my three grandchildren. I make an automatic deposit every single month. So, I put in $42 a month for each of my grandchildren every month, so it comes out to $500 a year. It's just easy. I can't use any other word but that ‘it’s easy.’"

Let’s separate fact from fiction.

Investing can feel complicated, and misconceptions about saving are everywhere. So while at the Zoo, we shared some common statements about saving and helped families identify what’s fact and what’s fiction. When they got a question right, a coin was added to our giant rocket-shaped piggy bank.

FACT: You can save for your baby’s future education before they’re even born.
When your baby arrives, things get hectic. But it’s simple to open an Embark account in your own name before the baby is born, and then switch the beneficiary to your kid later.

FICTION: Saving for education is complicated.
It can feel that way, but it doesn’t have to. Embark makes it simple to manage your savings, and gives you peace of mind.

FACT: Starting early matters more than starting big.
The sooner you start, the more time your funds have to grow and earn interest tax-free.

FICTION: Saving only matters if you can fully cover their future education.
Nope! Every bit you save today can help later on, especially when combined with scholarships and financial aid programs.

FACT: $500 makes a difference for your kid’s future.
It’s true! Kids with even $500 saved in an Embark 529 account are still three times more likely to pursue education after high school. Saving for your kid’s future shows them you believe in their potential.

FICTION: A 529 plan can only pay for college.
Your Embark funds can go towards educational expenses of all kinds, including trade school, certificate programs, community college, and more.

A few more saving details.

  1. Is it better to save monthly or wait and save more later?
Saving small amounts monthly is usually more effective because it lets you start earlier, and gives your funds more time to grow. When investing with Embark, time works in your favor.
  2. What’s the difference between a savings account and a 529 plan?
A traditional savings account is made to help you save for short-term goals, but a 529 plan like Embark is built specifically for long-term education savings with tax benefits that help your funds grow. Need more info? Check out our full blog post on what makes these saving approaches different.
  3. Do I need a lot of money to get started?
Nope! You can open an Embark account with a $25 contribution, and small, consistent contributions can lead to meaningful growth over time.
