Introducing the kindergarten diploma program.

Kindergarten is an important milestone. For many children, it’s the first big step into a world of learning, discovery, and independence.

That’s why Oregon Treasurer Dr. Elizabeth Steiner is partnering with the Director of the Oregon Department of Education, Dr. Williams, to create a congratulatory statewide “diploma” that can be given to every Oregon kindergartner at the end of the school year.

The initiative kicks off on May 28 at Vose Elementary in Beaverton, where Treasurer Steiner and Dr. Williams will join graduating kindergartners for a cheerful celebration. After meeting the students and reading a story, they’ll present diplomas to the class and help mark this exciting milestone with a few words for their parents.

Saving for what comes next.

At the same time, Embark’s Kinder Grad program helps families begin planning for the dreams that lie ahead. With Kinder Grad, families who open an Embark 529 account for a kindergartner who’s five or six receive an automatic $100 contribution to help kick start their education savings. And there’s no special paperwork or form required! You’ll see that extra $100 contribution added within three months of the account being opened.

Families who already have an Embark account for their kindergartner can also earn a refundable Oregon income tax credit worth up to $380. And when loved ones contribute to an Embark account to celebrate a kindergartner’s graduation, they can get a tax credit too.

Planning for your child’s future matters, but getting started can feel overwhelming. Explore Oregon Treasury resources designed to help you build financial security and take confident steps toward your future.

“Education is the pathway to your dreams, and our next generation is starting out their journeys with excitement and smiles and sometimes not all their teeth. We are so pleased to be able to help the families of Oregon kindergartners begin investing toward their education futures in a big, positive way.”

— Dr. Elizabeth Steiner, Oregon State Treasurer

Every kindergartner deserves to be recognized with a certificate. It gives them something tangible to hold onto and share with their loved ones — and it looks great hanging on the fridge! It’s also a reminder that big dreams can start taking shape early, and that saving now can help support whatever comes later.
